Liberal Democrats score stunning win over Reform

Liberal Democrats have scored a stunning win over Reform in the Kenn Valley by-election for Teignbridge District Council. Candidate Kevin Smith won over 50% of the vote, and gained over twice the number of votes as the Reform candidate.
“I am delighted that my neighbours in Kenn Valley have put their trust in me, by voting for me to represent them on Teignbridge District Council,” said Kevin Smith. “In the course of the election I spoke to very many people and it is clear that most of them reject the divisive politics of the right. I think the vote clearly demonstrates that. I believe strongly that there is more that unites us than divides us, especially when it comes to trying to achieve the best for our local communities.”
The votes cast were as follows:
Party | Votes cast |
---|---|
Liberal Democrats | 1,116 |
Reform | 512 |
Conservative Party | 212 |
Independent | 181 |
Green Party | 122 |
Labour Party | 59 |
Independent | 12 |
Total (inc. spoiled) | 2,219 |
Guy Cochran, Chair of Central Devon Liberal Democrats, commented, “Whilst the media coverage would lead us to believe Reform are unstoppable, we found the appetite on the ground for their form of divisive politics was limited. We know some people ‘loaned’ us their vote, and we are grateful to those Labour and Green Party supporters, and those moderate Conservatives, who chose Kevin as the best way to represent our community. Thank you.”
