Jan Goffey to contest local by-election

The Liberal Democrats have chosen Jan Goffey, twice Mayor of Okehampton Town, as their candidate in the by-election for a Borough Councillor for Okehampton South ward. The by-election will be held on Thursday 6th November.

“I'm delighted Jan has been selected to stand in this West Devon Borough Council by-election,” commented local Liberal Democrat Councillor George Dexter. “Jan has got Okehampton in her blood. She's been Mayor of the town twice; she helped get Oke Rail up and running and the Exeter to Okehampton line reopened; she's a trustee and active volunteer for Okehampton Community Transport; and still finds the time to help at The Museum of Dartmoor Life and guide visitors to Okehampton's shops and attractions.”

“Many local residents know Jan, as she taught them in Okehampton and the surrounding villages' schools. She's also been a tireless campaigner for improved local healthcare provision. She helped stave off the closure of Okehampton Community Hospital and was a founder of the North Dartmoor Health Initiative, which is currently very active in trying to improve overall health and dentistry care in Okehampton and its surrounding areas.”

“I am so pleased to have been chosen,” said Jan. “I think people that know me, know how much I care about Okehampton. It's a great place with a great community, but we too often get ignored when it comes to getting a ‘fair deal’ for services and resources.”

“I've been talking to lots of people recently, and I know there is a lot of unhappiness with national politics. But this is a local election about local challenges, it is not going to fix any national problems. So I hope people will see that it is about electing someone that cares, not someone standing for election to make political points on national issues.”

“It's clear from the Devon County Council elections that this will be a very close election,” said George Dexter. “The choice is clear. If people want a hard working Councillor who will address local problems then Jan is the one to choose.”
