Cllr. Frank Letch presents parking petition

Devon County Council's plans to introduce paid parking zones in 8 rural Devon towns (where currently parking is free but time limited) has aroused significant opposition. Both Okehampton and Crediton will be effected.

Many see this as little more than a money raising exercise. Few see any traffic control problems that need to be addressed. Most worry it will impact traders and retailers on the high street.

The Liberal Democrats have been collecting signatures to a petition to ask Conservative controlled Devon County Council to withdraw these proposals.

On Thursday 15th February Liberal Democrat Councillor Frank Letch presented the petition to Council Leader John Hart.

"I asked for an assurance that this matter would be fully debated by the Council Cabinet," said Frank Letch. "An assurance I received from Mr. Hart. I will be attending the Cabinet meeting and arguing against these plans."

We will keep you up to date with this issue. It really does look like a solution looking for a problem, unless the problem is chronic underfunding of Devon County by national government.
