Lib Dems Protest Against MIU Closures

"The news that Ashburton and Buckfastleigh Hospital is to re-open the Minor

Injury Unit something to celebrate" said Cllr Sally Morgan, LibDem PPC for

Central Devon and Executive Support Member for Health at Devon County Council.

Cllr Morgan campaigned to keep all MIUs open across the County when they

were threatened with closure due to budget pressures over 2 years ago.

Ashburton and Buckfastleigh Minor Injury Unit was closed temporarily due to staffing problems and is set to re-open on Monday 30th June.

" This time was different, and in some ways more concerning, as the closure

was partly due to the shortage of qualified staff. I am delighted that the MIU has re-opened and that it will be staffed by an experienced MIU Sister from Dartmouth. I am also delighted by the appointment of a 'Modern Matron'. This can

only help to enhance the already excellent service provided by a valued and

precious resource that is a Community Hospital. I hope the Primary Care Trust

will monitor the situation carefully so that this sort of closure can be

avoided in the future. I also hope that they continue to invest in our

Community Hospitals'.
